Fotoseptiembre
Cultura Thursday, September 30th, 2010Photography, whether we’re behind the lens or simply viewing a photo, has a direct impact on our lives even if we fail to notice it. Photos can be as simple as your Facebook profile photo, a photograph during the Civil War in your history textbook, or a poster on your wall.
This semester, in part with my dream to become a professional photojournalist, I decided that it was time to take a photography class. With the digital single-lense reflex (DLSR) camera purchased, and books ordered I was ready to go. On the first day of class, we spoke of an extremely popular event that is held in San Antonio every year called FotoSeptiembre.
Fotoseptiembre is an International Photography Festival which takes place September 1 through the 30 every year in San Antonio and the surrounding Texas Hill Country. The festival began in 1996, and went international in 1998. During the event’s 15 years of existence, it has created a growing interest in photographic arts in the South Texas area. The organizers of FotoSeptiembre said on their web site, “This growth reflects a deep interest in photography both as an art form and as a means of personal and cultural expression.”
Every single event throughout the month of September is free to anyone who wishes to attend, though the exhibits aren’t all in one place, but all over San Antonio. Most of the exhibits are scheduled by geographical location, and host more than one photographer at a time so viewers and photography enthusiasts can have a variety of work to look at.
IN 2002 the festival included a wide spectrum of photography work with about 230 artists in 75 exhibits at 62 venues all in 30 days! I don’t know about you, but I plan on attending quite a few of these events, to not only to become inspired by the work of others, but to enjoy multicultural work and contribute to the artistic advancement of not only myself, but the professionals.
